Meet the Volunteers - Scout

Girls Rock Glasgow is only possible with the help of our amazing volunteers, let’s get to know some of our 2024 stars who made last years Rock School one to remember…

Hey Scout! Tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Scout, im 18 and I'm from sunny glasgow. I grew up with music all my life, mostly because my dad was in the band GUN, back in the early days of Blind Allez and Phobia. I've been in a couple of bands in the last year and a half, but currently I'm in a new band called Red Stripe, a now female fronted band (only me) that plays a mix of punk, metal and rock.

Why did you apply to be a volunteer?
I applied because I believe that there needs to be a more secure space for women and non-binary people in music. As diverse as the music scene is, there are still people who believe that fully female/female fronted/non-binary arists and bands arent as good. I wanted to make somewhat of a difference, and the best way to do that is to make a space for them, and encourage them to do what they want to do with music. I love being part of that space that GRG has created.

What have you taken away from the experience?
I've realised just how invested I became in the kid's success, I was so Aside from the fact that I have realised that loads of young people are better at music than me, I took away the smiling faces, and enthusiastic joy that the space gave to the kids.

What makes a “good” volunteer?
A good volunteer is someone who is willing to put in the work to assist. Someone who understands different people's different abilities, and tries to push them to do their best based on those abilities without pushing too hard. As long as someone is enthusiastic, lovely to be around, and is understanding, then they have potential to be a good volunteer.

What would you like to tell people about Girls Rock Glasgow?
Wether you believe that GRG is making a difference or not -- which is definitely is -- you can see that it makes not only the children who apply for the school happy, but also make the volunteers happy. It's and incredible environment, and is relevant to what is currently happening in the music scene all over the globe.

Thanks Scout!
