Girls Rock Glasgow is only possible with the help of our amazing volunteers, let’s get to know some of our 2024 stars who made last years Rock School one to remember…
Name: April G (she/her)
GRG Voluntary Role/s: Art Instructor
Hey April! Tell us a bit about yourself?
I'm April, I'm a very creatively orientated person - I love making art, digital and traditional. I play bass in an all female punk band Venus in The Lake - we're a real ride or die girl gang. I'm an actor and content creator, and I absolutely adore table top roleplay games. I spend most of my time creating YouTube and TikTok videos, if I'm not making music or art commissions, or spending time with my friends.
Why did you apply to be a volunteer?
I had heard about GRG for a long time, as Alice Black is my best friend it was inevitable I was going to get involved at some point! But at the time I was very interested in pursuing something that would let me pass down knowledge I'm passionate about, in this case I created the logo design workshop to teach the kids, which ties in nicely to the band creation that happens in GRG!
What have you taken away from the experience?
I've realised just how invested I became in the kid's success, I was so emotional at the final showcase and it really surprised me, but in a good way! It feels very fulfilling to help out in the process of making young women feel like rockstars. It was also such a privilege to create the showcase artwork poster as it seem to be incredibly well received. I also loved collaborating/working with Lorn and Choirstaidh - two other incredible artists I connected with because of GRG.
What makes a “good” volunteer?
I think a good volunteer has to be up for anything they're able bodied enough to handle - whether that's helping an attendant feel less overwhelmed and cheering them up, or carrying a bunch of chairs up a flight of stairs!
What would you like to tell people about Girls Rock Glasgow?
Girls rock is a wonderful place, ran by amazing people, we're girls girls (even if you don't identify as such!) it's an incredibly wholesome experience, and if you want to feel warm and fuzzy in the knowledge that you changed young lives, you should come volunteer. I wish I had this kind of support network when I was little and wanted to pursue music and connect with other people, it would've given me the confidence to start way earlier than I did!
Thanks April!
