Block 3 is all about bringing music to life on screen.

Across four free workshops, you’ll work with industry professionals to develop, plan, shoot and direct your own music video. You’ll explore how music videos tell stories, communicate ideas and create a visual world around a song—before putting those skills into practice and making something of your own.

Introduction to Music Video Making

What makes a memorable music video? From performance videos and visual storytelling to animation and experimental film, you’ll explore different styles and discover how directors use images to communicate a message, mood or story.

You’ll watch and discuss examples, break down how they were created and begin developing ideas for your own music video.

Storyboarding and Planning

Turn your initial idea into a clear plan for filming. You’ll learn how to develop your concept, create a storyboard and plan each scene, shot and transition.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a visual roadmap to guide your music video shoot.

Introduction to Filmmaking

It’s time to get behind the camera. You’ll learn practical filmmaking skills, including how to operate a camera, frame and compose shots, use lighting and plan coverage.

You’ll then begin filming your own music video and putting your storyboard into action.

Directing Masterclass

Take control of your creative vision in our final filming workshop. You’ll explore how directors communicate with performers and crew, make creative decisions on set and bring together camera, performance and story.

You’ll continue shooting and directing your music video with support from experienced industry professionals.

Big Day Out

We’ll finish the block with a visit to a working television, film or creative industry space. We’re currently planning a behind-the-scenes experience where you can learn more about the different careers involved in bringing productions to the screen.

All workshops are completely free and take place on Thursday evenings from 6:00–7:30pm at the Girls Rock Glasgow HQ, 2 Wester Common Drive, Glasgow.

The senior programme is open to young people aged 13–17 and the Junior programme is open to 8 -12. Details of dates for both sessions to the side. No previous filmmaking experience is needed. Just bring your ideas and get ready to create.
